West Central Telephone Earns ‘Carbon Buster’ Award
Senator Amy Klobuchar recognizes Sebeka-based company for clean energy initiatives, energy independence vision
For Immediate Release
(SEBEKA, MN) During her recent visit to West Central Telephone (WCTA), Senator Amy Klobuchar was so impressed with the cooperative’s research and application of renewable, green energies that she has honored the telecommunications company with the Carbon Busters Award of Excellence.
Sen. Klobuchar stopped in Sebeka in November as part of her statewide ‘Main Street Tour’, where she spoke with representatives from organizations that are leading Minnesota’s ‘green’ initiatives. While in Sebeka, Sen. Klobuchar learned about the cooperative’s use of renewable energy to power their fiber optic infrastructure, and about Zenergy, their newest service offering designed to assist others with renewable technology. Sen. Klobuchar also learned ways WCTA is helping the community by educating customers on energy efficiency, renewable energy creation and development, as well as energy conservation.
“We were honored to have Sen. Klobuchar visit WCTA a few weeks back,” said Tony Mayer, CEO of WCTA. “Now to be recognized with this Carbon Buster Award of Excellence furthers our plan to be recognized as a leader in clean, renewable energy here in Minnesota.”
Sen. Klobuchar started the Carbon Busters Program in 2007 as a way to recognize Minnesota students and organizations that are helping to raise awareness for energy efficiency, reduction of greenhouse gases and combating global warming. In Washington, Sen. Klobuchar is a part of three Senate committees – Environment, Agriculture and Commerce – and she has made global climate a key issue during her time in the Senate.
“Climate change is a real problem, but it also has real solutions. Among these solutions is changing how we produce and consume our energy, which would also save us money and strengthen our economy. These award recipients are showing us how we can take serious action and make a difference,” the Senator said during Thursday’s event.
West Central Telephone was awarded the Carbon Busters Award of Excellence in a ceremony at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities campus Thursday afternoon. In addition to WCTA, Merrick Inc. was awarded a ‘Carbon Buster’ for their work towards making the lives of developmentally challenged adults more energy efficient. Mark Schiller, Chaska, Minn., is a student at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and was recognized with a Carbon Buster Awards, while the Applied Environmental Solutions group, also from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, was recognized for its’ contribution to protecting the environment.
